Diners with special diets or food allergies have a wide variety of options in our dining venues.
All of our concepts offer vegetarian/vegan options, there are two extensive salad bars and one unit, Healthy Select serves only vegetarian/vegan cuisine.
Because items are priced a la carte and because many of our venues offer customizable options, diners are able to create a meal that meets their needs. For example, many items can be made vegan by requesting no cheese. Furthermore, several of our sandwich concepts offer Gluten Friendly bread by request. Fireside Pizza also offers Gluten Friendly pizza crust on its own pan by request (although we cannot guarantee against cross contact as we have one pizza oven).
We have published several helpful guides on our website:
- Nutritional Resources: An overview of healthy eating, special diets and information on food allergies.
- Gluten Friendly Resources: A list of gluten friendly foods available in our dining venues, markets and vending machines.
- Vegetarian & Vegan Dining: A guide outlining the many vegetarian and vegan options on campus.
Foods are identified on our online or onsite menus by the following key:
- (GF): Gluten Friendly
- (V): Vegetarian
- (V+): Vegan
Some of the options that we regularly recommend are:
We have also just added a Worry Free Fare cooler in Sanford Commons. It is stocked with specialty products for diners with food allergies. And, we do offer a variety of Gluten Friendly, Vegetarian and Vegan products in the Markets.
We ask all diners with special diets or food allergies to identify themselves to our supervisors so that we can better serve their needs. This is not to single out these students but to help us prevent cross-contact. Those needing additional help can schedule a facility tour or an appointment with our Registered Dietitian.
Please note that we handle and prepare egg, milk, wheat, shellfish, fish, soy, peanut, tree nut and other potential allergens in our cafes and kitchens. Please inform your server if you have a food allergy and direct questions to a supervisor.
Appalachian Food Services makes every attempt to identify ingredients that may cause allergic reactions for those with food allergies. Every effort is made to instruct our food production staff on the severity of food allergies. There is always a risk of contamination. There is also a possibility that manufacturers of the commercial foods we use could change the formulation or substitute at any time, without notice. Customers concerned with food allergies need to be aware of this risk. We cannot guarantee the absence of cross contamination. All foods in the dining hall are prepared in an institutional cooking environment that could involve accidental contamination with the foods you may be allergic to. To that end, always carry your Epipen.
