As Food Allergy Awareness Week shines a spotlight on the importance of safe and inclusive dining experiences, Appalachian State University is celebrating national recognition for its ongoing efforts to support students with food allergies and dietary restrictions.

App State was recently ranked the #2 allergy-friendly college in the nation — and the #1 public university — in the 2026 Top 100 Allergy-Friendly Colleges rankings by Spokin, a leading food allergy and celiac lifestyle platform. After placing #5 in last year’s rankings, App State climbed three spots in 2026, reflecting the continued growth of its allergy-friendly dining program.

The annual rankings are based on reviews submitted through the Spokin app by students and families navigating food allergies and dietary restrictions on college campuses nationwide. This year’s rankings recognized colleges and universities creating supportive, inclusive dining experiences for students managing food allergies and celiac disease.

App State Campus Dining has continued expanding its allergy-friendly dining initiatives in recent years, including enhanced allergen labeling, allergy-trained staff, worry-free dining stations, digital menu transparency through Nutrislice, and personalized support for students navigating dietary needs.

“This recognition is incredibly meaningful because it reflects the experiences of our students and families,” said Elizabeth Riede, executive director of Campus Dining. “Rankings are never the end goal, but we’re proud that this highlights the intentional work our team puts into making sure every student feels welcomed and supported. We remain committed to providing this high level of specialized care while ensuring our dining program remains accessible and a great value for all of our students, allowing them to dine with confidence on our campus.”

Campus Dining’s allergy-friendly initiatives include the Savor station at Rivers Street Café, which prepares menu items without the top nine allergens or gluten, along with allergy-safe grab-and-go options, detailed ingredient transparency through digital menus, and allergy-trained chefs and staff identified by purple Allergy Resource badges.

“Our goal is to help students feel safe, confident and included from the moment they step onto campus,” said Farrah Reidt, director of nutrition for Campus Dining. “Food allergies can add a lot of stress to the college experience, so we work hard to provide transparency, education and individualized support that helps students thrive both nutritionally and socially.”

The recognition continues a growing list of national honors for App State Campus Dining’s allergy-friendly and inclusive dining program, including receiving the FARE FEAST Award for Outstanding Allergen-Free Menu Innovation.

Food Allergy Awareness Week serves as an opportunity to recognize the importance of creating dining environments where all students can feel safe, supported and included, something App State Campus Dining continues to prioritize every day.
