On January 6, the FDA issued updated guidance outlining changes to its classification of certain allergens:

  • Coconut has been removed from the list of tree nuts, along with beech, butternut, chestnut, chinquapin, cola/kola, ginkgo, hickory, palm, pili, and shea.
  • The guidance also broadens the definition of eggs to include duck, goose and quail.
  • The classification of milk now covers sheep and goat varieties.

App State Campus Dining’s current system identifies coconut as a tree nut. As of this notice, allergen labeling is being updated to align with the new FDA guidelines. With numerous menus across campus, this transition will take time.

Individuals with a coconut allergy should continue to check the full ingredient lists on our online menus. All types of animal milk are currently labeled under the milk allergy category and the recent FDA update regarding goose and quail eggs does not impact our current menus.

Now included in the list of tree nuts are:

  • almond
  • black walnut
  • Brazil nut
  • California walnut
  • cashew
  • filbert/hazelnut
  • heartnut/Japanese walnut
  • macadamia nut/Bush nut
  • pecan
  • pine nut/pinion nut
  • pistachio
  • English + Persian walnut

March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme — Food Connects Us — is especially meaningful to us at Campus Dining. More than just meals, dining is about bringing people together, sharing cultures, and creating memories. To celebrate, we’ve planned a series of exciting events designed to highlight the power of food to foster connection and community.

Virtual Recipe Swap

Share a taste of your culture, traditions, or favorite memories! Submit your cherished recipes by March 18, and we’ll compile them into a digital recipe book that highlights the diverse flavors and stories of our campus community.

Spring Break in Sanford Commons

Kick off National Nutrition Month with an afternoon of fun, food, and freebies! Join us on March 4, from 2 – 4 p.m., in the Sanford Commons Rotunda for an interactive event in collaboration with Campus Activities, Wellness & Prevention Services, and Campus Dining.

Community Movie Nights
Enjoy a free movie and popcorn while exploring how food brings people together in film. No meal swipe needed — just check in with the greeter and head to the Jimmy Smith Lounge in Rivers Street Café. Movies start at 6 p.m.

March 5 - Ratatouille
March 19 - Julie & Julia
March 26 - The Blue Zones Mini-Series

Mindful Meal

Slow down and savor the moment with an interactive mindful eating practice featuring a BBQ lunch. In partnership with Wellness & Prevention, this event takes place at 12:30 p.m. on March 18th in The Grandfather Ballroom (Section B), Plemmons Student Union.

Universal Meals Takeover
